Make a Start with these Simple Green Living Ideas for the Health of our Environment
Green Living: you can make a difference to the environment. Something is better than nothing, so making some changes to help the planet, especially when they also help you directly, is a good move. These are some very simple green living ideas that you can easily put into practice. Green living refers to a type of lifestyle that has the welfare of the Earth and local environment in mind.
Scientists believe that carbon is a major contributor to global warming and green living strategies look at ways to reduce carbon, waste products, toxins and the exploitation of natural resources. You will see that these strategies can improve your health as well as saving you money.
You can make a few changes in your life to help reduce the volumes of carbon in the atmosphere that is choking the planet. Use your car less often, particularly for short distances. It isn’t too hard to change to using public transport or car pooling to work. Get some exercise and improve your fitness by leaving the car at home and walking. You are saving the planet and improving your health at the same time.
Help to save the environment by swapping the incandescent light bulbs in your home for compact fluorescent ones that need less power to light. You won’t need to replace the CFLs as often and they save about 70% of power as well. You can save about $50 by replacing just 5 of your incandescent bulbs, so imagine the savings if you changed all of them? Switch household appliances off at the wall when not in use.
Plants foods are good for your health but they also help to store carbon in the soil, so they are also good for a healthy environment. Again, you are helping the environment but you are also living a healthier lifestyle. Cattle compact the soil and produce large amounts of methane which is a harmful greenhouse gas. Limit the amount of red meat you eat and have smaller portions, and eat more lean poultry and fish; the planet and your body will thank you.
Reduce your environmental footprint by putting the three Rs into place – reduce, reuse and recycle. Reducing your dependence on plastics in the home helps the environment by reducing the toxins that are produced by their manufacture. Use your own bags for shopping, like your grandmother did, and reduce the amount of plastic bags in landfill. Stop and think before you print out an email, memo or article to try and reduce paper use. Recycle plastic bottles and packaging – be inventive in discovering new ways to use them again and again.
Water is a precious resource so cut down on how much you use. By reducing your shower time by just 2 minutes will save a significant amount of water. Control the flow of water from your taps to prevent losing it down the drain. Save water by using the washing machine rinse water to wash the car. Try alternative ways to heat and cool your home like solar power, blinds that regulate the temperature and plants around the house to control temperatures.
You can benefit the environment in many ways; these are just a few suggestions. Do some research and find more ways to improve the health of both the environment and your family. Work on the issue as a family, because environmental problems affect us all.
